MATERIALS & FINISHES

Flat Bottom Pouch Materials & Finish Options

The right pouch structure depends on what you are packing, the required barrier performance, filling conditions, shelf life and the appearance you want on the retail shelf. We can combine different films, barrier layers and surface finishes around your specific packaging requirements.

Flat bottom pouch material structures and printing finish options for custom flexible packaging
01
BARRIER STRUCTURES

Material Options

Flexible laminates can be selected according to the product’s sensitivity to moisture, oxygen, light and aroma.

PET / PE

A widely used structure for products that require good strength, printability and reliable sealing performance.

PET / METPET / PE

Metallized barrier structures can provide increased protection against moisture, oxygen and light.

PET / AL / PE

Aluminum foil structures are available for applications requiring stronger barrier performance and light protection.

Kraft Paper Laminates

Paper-look outer layers can create a natural presentation while inner flexible layers provide sealing and product protection.

EVOH / PE High-Barrier Option

Transparent EVOH-based structures are available when high barrier performance is needed without an opaque foil or metallized layer.

Structure selection matters. Exact layer construction and thickness should be confirmed according to your product, filling process and shelf-life target.
02

SIZE & CAPACITY GUIDE

How to Choose the Right Flat Bottom Pouch Size

Flat bottom pouch dimensions should be selected around your actual product, filling weight and required headspace. The same pouch size can hold very different weights depending on product density, particle size and how the product settles inside the package.

Flat bottom pouch size guide showing pouch width height gusset and custom capacity selection
W
WIDTH

Pouch Width

Width affects the front display area, filling opening and overall shelf profile of the finished pouch.

H
HEIGHT

Pouch Height

Height should allow enough space for the product, zipper, top seal and required headspace above the filling level.

G
GUSSET

Side & Bottom Depth

Gusset depth influences internal volume, base stability and the box-shaped appearance of the pouch after filling.

IMPORTANT

Same Bag Size ≠ Same Filling Weight

A dense product such as grains may fill the same pouch at a much higher net weight than tea leaves, dried fruit, nuts or other lightweight products. Capacity must therefore be evaluated by product type rather than pouch dimensions alone.

Example Filling Capacity for Common Dry Products

The figures below are useful as an initial sizing reference. Actual capacity can vary with bulk density, particle shape, product settling, zipper position and required headspace.

Reference Only
Reference Size Dense Grains Flour / Powder Dried Fruit Tea Seeds / Nuts Pet Food
12.5 × 20 + 7 cm ~750 g ~300 g ~200 g ~120 g ~250 g ~250 g
15.5 × 24 + 7 cm ~1 kg ~500 g ~400 g ~150 g ~500 g ~500 g
18 × 28 + 8 cm ~2 kg ~1.5 kg ~550 g ~350 g ~850 g ~1 kg
20 × 30 + 8 cm ~2.5 kg ~2 kg ~800 g ~500 g ~1.1 kg ~1.25 kg
20 × 37 + 10 cm Up to ~5 kg* ~2.5 kg ~1.5 kg ~750 g Test Required ~1.5 kg
!
These are reference capacities, not guaranteed filling weights.

Actual results depend on product density, particle size, moisture content, filling method, pouch construction and required headspace. The largest-size dense-product figure should always be confirmed by an actual filling test before production.

Best practice: confirm the final pouch size with your real product.

For new projects, a reference size can help narrow down the options, but an actual filling test or sample evaluation gives a much more reliable result before mass production.

PRINTING & ORDER QUANTITY

Digital or Gravure Printing for Flat Bottom Pouches?

Flat bottom pouches require more converting and material than simpler pouch styles, so digital printing can become relatively expensive as order quantity increases. We normally recommend the printing method based on total project cost rather than MOQ alone.

01 DIGITAL
1,000–2,000 pcs

Digital Printing Recommended

A practical option for smaller launches, new products, artwork testing or projects where you do not want to invest in printing cylinders.

  • No gravure cylinder setup
  • Suitable for smaller quantities
  • Flexible for new or changing artwork
  • Helpful for multi-SKU projects
02 COMPARE COST
3,000+ pcs

Compare Digital vs Gravure

Once the quantity reaches around 3,000 pieces, digital printing costs for flat bottom pouches can become relatively high. This is where we normally start comparing the total project cost.

  • Compare total cost, not only unit price
  • Check number of colors and SKUs
  • Consider future repeat orders
  • Stable artwork favors gravure more quickly
03 GRAVURE
~10,000+ pcs

Gravure Usually Makes More Sense

For stable designs and larger production runs, gravure printing usually provides better production economics even after adding cylinder setup costs.

  • Lower unit cost at higher quantity
  • Better suited to repeat production
  • Consistent for stable artwork
  • Suitable for larger commercial programs
$
REAL PRODUCTION LOGIC

More Pieces Can Sometimes Mean Better Total Value

For some flat bottom pouch projects, producing only 3,000–5,000 pieces digitally may result in a relatively high total cost. If the artwork is stable and the customer can accept a larger quantity, producing around 10,000 pieces by gravure can sometimes be the more economical choice.

QUICK COMPARISON

Digital Printing vs Gravure Printing

Factor Digital Printing Gravure Printing
Best Quantity Around 1,000–2,000 pcs Around 10,000 pcs and above
Cylinder Cost No cylinder required Cylinder setup required
Small Orders More suitable Usually less economical
Larger Orders Unit cost remains relatively high Usually better unit economics
Artwork Changes Easier for frequent changes Better for stable artwork
Multi-SKU Projects Flexible for smaller runs Evaluate quantity per SKU
Repeat Orders Useful for smaller ongoing volumes Strong choice for stable repeat business
MULTIPLE DESIGNS?

MOQ Also Depends on the Number of SKUs

A project with one design is different from a project with several flavors or product variants. When requesting a quote, tell us both the total quantity and quantity required for each SKU.

01 Total Quantity

How many pouches are required across the complete project?

02 Number of SKUs

How many different designs, flavors or product variants?

03 Quantity per SKU

The quantity allocated to each design affects printing economics.

04 Future Repeat Volume

Stable repeat orders can make gravure more attractive.

There is no single printing method that is cheapest for every project.

Pouch size, material structure, number of printing colors, number of SKUs, artwork stability and total order quantity all affect the final cost. We recommend comparing both methods when the project falls near the crossover range.

FUNCTIONAL FEATURES

Zippers, Valves & Custom Pouch Features

Flat bottom pouches can be customized with different opening, resealing and product-protection features. The right configuration depends on what you are packing, how the pouch will be used and the barrier performance required.

Custom flat bottom pouch features including resealable zipper one-way valve and packaging options
01
RESEALABILITY

Press-to-Close Zipper

A resealable zipper allows customers to open and close the pouch repeatedly, making it suitable for coffee, snacks, powders, pet treats and other multi-use products.

02
COFFEE PACKAGING

One-Way Degassing Valve

For freshly roasted coffee, an optional one-way valve allows internal gases to escape while helping reduce outside air from entering through the valve.

03
EASY OPENING

Tear Notch

Tear notches give the customer a clear opening point and can be combined with a zipper positioned below the top seal.

04
PRODUCT VISIBILITY

Clear Window

Selected structures can include a transparent window so customers can see the product while the surrounding pouch remains fully customized with printed artwork.

FOR ROASTED COFFEE

Why Add a One-Way Valve to Coffee Bags?

Freshly roasted coffee continues releasing carbon dioxide after roasting. A one-way degassing valve provides a controlled path for this gas to escape without requiring the pouch to remain open.

One-way degassing valve infographic for freshly roasted coffee packaging
01 Gas Can Escape

Carbon dioxide released by roasted coffee can move outward through the one-way valve.

02 Helps Manage Pressure

The valve can help reduce gas buildup inside sealed coffee packaging after filling.

03 Supports Sealed Packaging

Coffee can remain in a sealed pouch while gases generated after roasting are released through the valve.

04 Custom Valve Position

Valve placement can be coordinated with pouch dimensions, artwork and the customer’s filling requirements.

CONFIGURATION

Features Should Match the Product

Not every pouch needs every option. We recommend selecting functional features around the product, consumer use and packaging process rather than adding features unnecessarily.

Coffee Zipper + optional one-way valve
Snacks & Nuts Zipper + tear notch + optional window
Protein Powder Wide opening + zipper + high-barrier structure
Pet Food Strong structure + resealable zipper

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Flat Bottom Pouch FAQs

Below are answers to common questions about flat bottom pouch quantities, printing methods, materials, sizing, valves, samples and custom production.

01 What is the MOQ for custom flat bottom pouches?

The practical MOQ depends on pouch size, material, printing method and the number of SKUs. For many flat bottom pouch projects, around 1,000–2,000 pieces is a practical range for digital printing.

Because digital production costs for this pouch style are relatively high, projects above around 3,000 pieces should normally be compared with gravure printing before the final quantity is confirmed.

02 Should I choose digital or gravure printing?

Digital printing is usually more suitable for smaller orders, new product launches, changing artwork and multi-SKU projects. It does not require gravure cylinders.

For stable designs and larger quantities, gravure printing normally provides better unit economics. Once the order reaches around 3,000 pieces, we recommend comparing both methods instead of automatically continuing with digital printing.

03 Why might 10,000 gravure pouches make more sense than 3,000–5,000 digital pouches?

Flat bottom pouches are relatively expensive to produce digitally. As quantity increases, the total digital cost can rise quickly.

For some stable designs, producing approximately 10,000 pieces by gravure printing can offer better overall value than producing only 3,000–5,000 pieces digitally, even after cylinder setup costs are included.

The exact crossover depends on pouch dimensions, material structure, printing colors, number of SKUs and artwork.

04 Can I order several designs or SKUs in one project?

Yes. Multi-SKU projects are possible, but we need to know both the total project quantity and the quantity required for each SKU.

Digital printing is often more flexible for smaller multi-SKU runs. For gravure projects, the quantity per design, printing colors and cylinder requirements all affect the final cost.

05 What materials can be used for flat bottom pouches?

Available structures can include combinations such as PET / PE, PET / METPET / PE, PET / AL / PE, kraft paper laminates and transparent high-barrier EVOH / PE options.

The correct structure should be selected according to the product, filling conditions, required moisture and oxygen barrier, target shelf life and sealing requirements.

06 How do I choose the correct flat bottom pouch size?

Pouch size should not be selected by net weight alone. Product density, particle size, headspace, zipper position, valve position and the way the product settles inside the bag all affect the required dimensions.

For the most reliable recommendation, send us your product type, target fill weight and current pouch dimensions or a physical sample if available. Final sizing is best confirmed with an actual filling test.

07 Can flat bottom coffee bags include a one-way degassing valve?

Yes. One-way degassing valves are available for roasted coffee packaging. They allow gases released by freshly roasted coffee to escape while helping reduce outside air entering through the valve.

Valve position can be coordinated with the pouch size, zipper, artwork and filling requirements.

Learn more about our custom coffee bag options .

08 Can you provide samples before mass production?

Yes. Existing stock samples can normally be provided for material, structure and workmanship reference, with shipping arranged separately.

Custom samples are also available when a project requires specific dimensions, printing or construction. Custom sample costs depend on the project requirements.

09 What information do you need to prepare a quotation?

For a more accurate quotation, please provide your product type, pouch dimensions, required material or barrier performance, order quantity, number of SKUs, printing artwork and any functional features such as zipper, valve or window.

If you are not sure about the structure or size, send us your product and target filling weight first. We can help narrow down the suitable options.

10 Can you add matte, gloss, metallic effects or clear windows?

Yes. Flat bottom pouches can be customized with matte or gloss surfaces, metallic appearances, paper-look laminates, transparent areas and other visual effects depending on the material structure and printing process.

Send us your artwork or a reference package and we can review which finish is practical for your project.
